Protect Your Crew

Ward Diesel Filter Systems proudly designs and manufactures exhaust filtration systems for fire trucks of varying makes and models. Integrating a diesel exhaust system in your emergency response vehicle is a crucial step in protecting the health and safety of your crew; however, determining which diesel exhaust system is right for your specific apparatus can be confusing.

Below are the key specifications, fitment considerations, and field performance factors you need to consider before purchasing a diesel exhaust system for fire trucks.

4 NO SMOKE Exhaust Filtration Systems for Fire Trucks and Emergency Response Vehicles

Ward Diesel designs and manufactures four types of fire truck apparatus emissions control systems through our NO SMOKE product line, featuring:

1. NO SMOKE

Key Features:

  • Specifically For 2006 and Earlier Model Engines (some 2007 & 2008 vehicles too)
  • Apparatus-Mounted, Direct Source Diesel Exhaust System
  • Automatic System With Manual Override Functionality for On-Scene Protection

NO SMOKE is our original diesel exhaust system for fire trucks. It’s designed specifically for 2006 and earlier model engines. NO SMOKE is an apparatus-mounted, direct source diesel exhaust system that captures toxic exhaust particulates and dispels harmless fumes.

NO SMOKE consists of a filter, a diverter unit, and an electronic control module. Once installed on your fire truck, NO SMOKE engages automatically when the vehicle’s ignition is turned on, activating the diverter unit to filter exhaust and prevent it from being pumped through the bays and into the station. This system features a preset timer to switch back to straight exhaust, giving your crew ample time to leave the station before doing so. A manual override function allows NO SMOKE to remain in filtering mode when the engine idles on scene of an emergency to protect your crew, bystanders, and other emergency responders from inhaling deadly exhaust emissions.

NO SMOKE also operates automatically when the vehicle is put into reverse when you return to the station to back into a bay and continually filters the exhaust until the vehicle is turned off, eliminating the spread of exhaust into the station.

2. NO SMOKE 2

Key Features:

  • Specifically For 2007, 2010, And Newer Model Engines (some 2008 & 2009 vehicles too)
  • Fully Automatic Exhaust Filtering System
  • Low Maintenance

NO SMOKE 2 is based on the original NO SMOKE, but includes improved features and functionality to improve operational efficiency and simplicity. NO SMOKE 2 is compatible with 2007, 2010, and newer vehicles.

Unlike NO SMOKE, NO SMOKE 2 does not require the diverter box technology and instead is installed in the tailpipe tip. It is a fully automatic system that continually filters harmful diesel exhaust whenever the vehicle’s ignition is engaged, even while idling. There are no features where it kicks on or off after a timer and you don’t have to remember to do a manual override when on scene of an emergency.

NO SMOKE 2 is low maintenance after installation and once the system is installed in your vehicle, you can set it and forget it, so you can give all your attention to responding to an emergency.

3. NO SMOKE Gas

Key Features:

  • Specifically For Gasoline Engines
  • Fully Automatic Exhaust Filtering System
  • Low Maintenance

NO SMOKE Gas is based on the NO SMOKE 2 design, but is specifically designed to be installed in vehicles with gasoline engines that emit higher levels of harmful gases. NO SMOKE Gas is ideal for a range of vehicle makes and models and can be installed on standard vehicles that are used in emergency response.

Ward Diesel utilizes our proprietary oxidation catalyst technology to manufacture a reliable, standardized converter design, combining the converter and muffler or the converter and silencer configurations for peak performance and low maintenance. NO SMOKE Gas is a fully automatic system and continually removes toxic carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides from the vehicle’s exhaust while it’s running at the station, on scene in an emergency, and while driving.

4. NO SMOKE For ARFF

Key Features:

  • Specifically For Aircraft Rescue And Firefighting
  • Vehicle-Mounted Direct Source, Diesel Exhaust Particulate Filter System
  • Fully Automatic Exhaust Filtering System

NO SMOKE for ARFF features a unique diesel exhaust filtering system that is required for aircraft rescue and firefighting. NO SMOKE for ARFF is a vehicle-mounted, direct source filtering system that operates automatically when the vehicle is started, providing continuous filtration both inside the station and during emergency responses.

The FAA’s 14CFR (FAR) Airport Rescue & Firefighting Requirements standardizes ARFF vehicle response time for efficiency and safety. When seconds count, your crew should be able to leave the station immediately and respond as quickly as possible. NO SMOKE for ARFF helps improve emergency response times by eliminating the need to latch and unlatch exhaust filtering hoses each time a vehicle enters and exits the station bay. This system also eliminates toxic exhaust fume exposure while your crew is responding to a fire or an emergency.
